This garden design project aimed to address a steep slope in the landscape, creating a functional, attractive, and modern outdoor space for our clients to enjoy all year round. It includes a bespoke garden room, contemporary slate fencing and a low-maintenance planting scheme for lasting appeal.
Project Overview
In our initial site assessment of the garden, we observed a significant slope directed toward the residence, which hindered many gardening plans and had caused our client to struggle with garden design in the past.
During our consultation, our client expressed a desire for the inclusion of a garden room or garage to enhance the functionality of the outdoor space.
Garden Room Design & Installation
To address the challenges posed by the steep terrain while integrating the custom garden room, we developed a design that thoughtfully considered the existing topography. Our approach involved excavating the outdoor area, installing a robust concrete base, constructing retaining walls, and implementing adequate drainage measures behind the walls.
Additionally, we incorporated supplementary drainage for the garage to effectively manage runoff from the paving.
Slate Fencing
The fence was painted to achieve coherence with the overall design aesthetic. We selected Brazilian slate paving, which harmonises well with the wall cladding to elevate the visual appeal of the landscape as a whole.
Low-Maintenance Planting Scheme
In alignment with the client’s request for a low-maintenance garden, we opted for a simplified planting scheme. We chose Prunus lusitanica for hedging, alongside Betula utilis ‘Jacquemontii’ trees to introduce height, privacy, and structural interest throughout the winter months.
The inclusion of Pittosporum ‘Silver Queen’ and Carex brunnera further enriches the modern and contemporary character of this garden, making it an exceptional outdoor environment.
